Herschel Rabitz

Professor Herschel Rabitz graduated from Harvard University in 1970, earning his Ph.D. in chemical physics. This was followed by post-doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin. In 1971, Herschel joined the faculty of the Princeton University Department of Chemistry, and chaired the department from 1993 to 1996. He is also an affiliated member of Princeton University’s Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics.

Herschel’s research interests lie at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and engineering, with principal areas of focus including molecular dynamics, biophysical chemistry, chemical kinetics, and optical interactions with matter. An overriding theme throughout his research is the emphasis on molecular-scale systems analysis. Herschel has 900+ publications in the general area of chemical physics.

Among Herschel’s many awards and honors are an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, an Alexander von Humboldt Award (2000 and 2014), a Willis E. Lamb Medal for Laser Science and Quantum Optics, and designation as a Charles Phelps Smyth Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University.
